Burlington Weather Alert: High Fire Risk From Wind and Dry Conditions Until Thursday Evening
BURLINGTON, Vt. — Fire danger is on the rise across Vermont and northern New York, with weather officials warning that gusty winds and low humidity could create near-critical fire conditions through 8 p.m. Thursday.
Winds and Dry Air Raise Concerns
The National Weather Service in Burlington reported that southerly winds will strengthen by late Thursday morning, blowing at 10–15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Localized gusts may even reach 35 mph in the Champlain Valley and exposed ridgelines, increasing the risk of fire spread.
The peak threat is expected between noon and 8 p.m. Thursday, when the combination of wind and dry fuels is most dangerous.
Humidity and Temperatures Add to Fire Risk
Meteorologists expect minimum humidity levels to drop between 25–35%, with the driest air lingering over the Champlain and Connecticut River Valleys. Afternoon temperatures are forecast to climb into the upper 70s and mid-80s, further drying out vegetation and brush.
“If any fires were to start, the combination of dry fuels and gusty winds could cause rapid spread, especially in elevated terrain and open grassland areas,” officials warned.
Safety Precautions for Residents
Authorities are urging residents to:
- Avoid outdoor burning until the advisory ends.
- Use caution when operating machinery or power tools outdoors.
- Properly extinguish cigarettes and avoid discarding them in grass or brush.
While no formal Red Flag Warning has been issued, forecasters caution that fire danger could increase if conditions worsen. Another update is expected early Thursday.
