Burke County House Fire Leaves 2 Dead, Cause Under Investigation

MORGANTON, N.C. — Authorities say two people were killed in a house fire on Swink Street in Burke County, with investigators still working to determine the cause of the blaze.

Fire Erupted Over the Weekend

The fire broke out Sunday, August 31, in Morganton. On Tuesday, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the deaths of two people inside the home.

One of the victims was identified as 63-year-old Michael Hallyburton, who was found dead inside. Officials said the second victim’s name will be released once an autopsy confirms their identity.

Investigation Involves Multiple Agencies

The fire has prompted a major investigation, with as many as 20 law enforcement agencies assisting, including the U.S. Marshals Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

So far, investigators have not released any information about the cause of the fire, saying only that the inquiry is ongoing.

Community on Edge

The deadly blaze has shaken the Morganton community, where residents say concerns about fire safety have grown following a series of destructive incidents in the region.

Officials emphasized that while the investigation continues, families should take extra precautions with smoke detectors, fire escape plans, and awareness of hazards in the home.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office is expected to release further updates once the second victim is identified and more details on the fire’s cause become available.
