Brush Fire Causes Major Traffic Backup on I-675 in Clayton County
CLAYTON COUNTY, GEORGIA — A brush fire along Interstate 675 caused heavy traffic delays across Clayton County early Friday morning, according to an alert issued by Georgia 511.
The incident occurred on I-675 northbound, just past Anvil Block Road, where smoke and flames were spotted along the side of the highway.
Traffic Backed Up for Miles
Live traffic cameras from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) showed long lines of vehicles backed up on the interstate as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. Commuters reported stop-and-go traffic extending several miles during the morning rush hour.
As of early Friday, authorities had not confirmed the cause of the fire. Officials said no injuries or vehicle damage were immediately reported.
Emergency Crews Respond Quickly
Clayton County fire crews responded to the scene shortly after the alert went out, extinguishing the flames and working to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby brush and wooded areas.
Officials warned drivers to use caution while passing through the affected stretch of highway, as lingering smoke could reduce visibility. Some lanes were temporarily slowed as crews conducted cleanup operations.
Investigation Into Cause Underway
Authorities are still investigating what may have sparked the roadside fire. Brush fires can occur from discarded cigarettes, overheated vehicle parts, or dry roadside vegetation, especially during fall’s drier conditions.
GDOT officials said they are monitoring the area for flare-ups and will issue additional traffic alerts if necessary.
Drivers Urged to Plan Alternate Routes
Motorists traveling northbound on I-675 were advised to seek alternate routes, including Interstate 285 or I-75, until congestion eased. Georgia 511 reported that normal traffic flow resumed later in the morning once the fire was fully contained.
The Georgia Department of Transportation and Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services remind drivers to avoid stopping along the shoulder unless absolutely necessary and to immediately report any roadside fires by calling 911.
