Beaufort County Deputy Suspended After Video Shows Him Pull Gun on Group of Boys

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — A Beaufort County deputy has been suspended without pay after a video surfaced showing him drawing his gun on a group of boys in his neighborhood Sunday evening, sparking both internal and criminal investigations.

Video Sparks Immediate Suspension

The incident occurred just after 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, when the off-duty deputy confronted the group on Hilton Head Island. While the sheriff’s office initially referred to it only as an “incident,” the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office later confirmed that the deputy drew his firearm on the youths.

Once command staff responded to the scene, the deputy was relieved of his badge, issued weapons, credentials, and equipment, according to the sheriff’s office. His name has not been released.

Internal and Criminal Investigations

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) said its Internal Affairs division has opened an administrative investigation into the matter, noting that deputies are held to the highest standards both on and off duty.

At the same time, the office has requested the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) review the case for possible criminal violations.

Once SLED’s investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Regional Public Integrity Unit, made up of senior prosecutors and investigators from the 1st and 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Offices, who will decide if charges are warranted.

Community Concerns

The sheriff’s office acknowledged public concern over the video, but said it will not comment further until investigations are complete. Officials encouraged anyone with direct knowledge of the incident to cooperate with BCSO and SLED.

Broader Accountability Questions

The suspension comes amid heightened scrutiny of law enforcement conduct across South Carolina, with recent cases of misconduct leading to criminal charges against officers. Advocates say the quick suspension in this case shows accountability but stress the need for transparency as the investigation unfolds.
