Ayers Leather Shop Celebrates 75 Years as Greenville’s Oldest Merchant

GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA – In the heart of downtown Greenville, a family legacy stitched in leather is celebrating a milestone few small businesses ever reach — 75 years of continuous operation.

A Humble Start with $13.50 and a Dream

What began in 1950 with just $13.50 and a storefront on North Street has grown into one of the Upstate’s most beloved institutions. Ayers Leather Shop, founded by Deb Ayers’ parents, was never intended to become Greenville’s oldest merchant. But three generations later, it’s still going strong — a hidden gem offering handmade leather goods and heartfelt service.

“I was six months old. I’ve been at work for now 75 years,” laughed Deb Ayers, reflecting on a lifetime spent in the shop. For her, the store wasn’t just a job — it was a way of life. Her parents even kept a crib on-site as they raised her within the walls of the business.

Celebrating 75 Years of Craftsmanship and Community

Wednesday marked the shop’s official 75th anniversary, and the celebration was as heartfelt as the work that built it. Shiny golden decorations, a table of snacks, and Deb’s grandmother’s fruit punch recipe set the scene. Visitors stopped by to deliver flowers, offer hugs, and share stories — a reminder of the community support that has kept Ayers thriving through challenges.

“Mom and Daddy just started trying to be a part of it all. They had no idea it would ever survive like it has,” Deb said.

A Rare Trade and a New Generation

While Deb has spent her life nurturing the shop, her son Payton Ayers found his own path into the family business — becoming the only person in South Carolina to specialize in travel repairs, a rare and intricate trade.

“There’s no university to go to for this kind of work,” Payton said. “You’ve got to be willing to learn hands-on and not be afraid to get the job done.”

Payton’s return has injected the shop with fresh energy and a deepened commitment to preserving what makes Ayers Leather Shop special: attention to detail, personal connections, and custom craftsmanship.

Resilience Through Changing Times

The shop’s journey hasn’t been without obstacles. It faced eviction in 2014 and previously lost its McAlister Square location during a period when malls and big-brand retailers pushed small businesses out. Despite these setbacks, the Ayers family stayed rooted in downtown Greenville — a place they now consider both home and lifeline.

“We were just in the right places at the right time,” Deb said.

Looking Ahead to a Century of Service

Though Deb jokes about retiring before the 100th anniversary, her son is already dreaming about it.

“Payton wants to celebrate the 100th anniversary. I think I’ll probably retire by then,” she said with a smile.

“To be a part of this town every day — it’s a blessing,” Payton added.
