Atlanta Road Rage Shooting on Highway 166 Leaves Two Girls Injured, Suspect Arrested
ATLANTA, GEORGIA – Two young girls were injured Friday morning after a road rage shooting on Highway 166 westbound, according to Atlanta police. The girls, ages 8 and 13, were grazed by a single bullet while riding in a vehicle with their mother following a minor traffic crash.
Traffic Dispute Escalates into Gunfire
Police say the shooting stemmed from a fender bender between the girls’ mother and another driver near Sylvan Road. When the mother attempted to confront the other motorist, that person fired a gun into her vehicle, striking both girls.
The mother drove to a BP gas station on Main Street in East Point, where authorities responded around 9 a.m. and located the injured children.
Victims Expected to Recover
The children were taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where doctors confirmed they were in stable condition. Both were grazed by the same bullet and are expected to make full recoveries.
21-Year-Old Suspect in Custody
Police arrested Bennie McCoy, 21, in connection with the shooting. He faces multiple charges, including:
- Four counts of aggravated assault
- Possession of a firearm during a felony
- Hit-and-run
McCoy is currently being held in Fulton County Jail, and officials say the arrest came with assistance from East Point police, who responded first at the gas station.
Full case details were reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Community Reacts to Violence
Drivers in the area were shaken by the shooting.
Elyse Logan, who passed the gas station minutes after the incident, said:
“I got a 10-year-old and 13-year-old. That could have easily been me.”
Dominique Perry, a regular visitor in the area, added:
“An 8-year-old and 13-year-old — it’s just shocking because I’m usually in this area. It just hit me.”
Both women urged others to avoid escalating traffic confrontations and to prioritize safety.
