Active Atlantic: Tracking Tropical Storm Dexter and Two Other Potential Systems

NORTH CAROLINA – Tropical activity in the Atlantic is ramping up as the 2025 hurricane season nears its peak, with meteorologists monitoring Tropical Storm Dexter and two other potential storm systems.

Tropical Storm Dexter

Dexter is moving on a northeasterly track through the North Atlantic, away from the U.S. mainland. Forecasters say the storm’s winds are increasing as it transitions into a powerful extratropical cyclone over cooler waters.

Despite losing its tropical characteristics, Dexter’s winds may briefly reach hurricane strength this week. No direct U.S. impacts are expected.

Low Pressure off the East Coast

An area of low pressure off the South Carolina coast has been moving north-northeast parallel to the Atlantic seaboard. The system has a low chance of developing into a tropical depression before transitioning to an extratropical system next week.

Even if it develops, forecasters say North Carolina’s weather is unlikely to be significantly affected.

Tropical Wave in the Central Atlantic

A tropical wave that moved off the west coast of Africa earlier this week remains disorganized but is entering a more favorable environment for development. The system could become a tropical depression by early next week.

If named, the storm would be called Erin, the next on the 2025 Atlantic storm list. No U.S. impacts are currently projected.

2025 Hurricane Season Outlook

Top forecasters at Colorado State University maintain their outlook for an above-average hurricane season with:

  • 16 named storms
  • 8 hurricanes
  • 3 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher)

This is consistent with NOAA’s forecast, which projects 13–19 named storms and 3–5 major hurricanes. So far, the season has produced four named storms — Andrea, Barry, Chantal, and Dexter. Tropical Storm Chantal caused deadly flooding in central North Carolina over the July 4 weekend.
