Light Snow Moves Toward Atlanta as Cold Front Brings Wintry Weather Across North Georgia

ATLANTA, Ga. — A light band of snow is moving toward the Atlanta metro area this afternoon as a strong cold front sweeps across North Georgia, bringing early winter conditions and the possibility of slick roads in higher elevations.

Meteorologist Chris Nunley reported that light snow was observed approaching the city around 3:00 p.m. EST, spreading southeast from Calhoun, Rome, and Canton toward Roswell, Sandy Springs, and downtown Atlanta.

Early Snowfall Spotted on Radar

Radar imagery shows light-to-moderate snow showers pushing through the northwest corridor of Georgia, with flakes already falling in areas such as Adairsville, Douglasville, and South Fulton. Arrows on Nunley’s radar update indicate the snow is moving directly toward the metro region, carried by cold northwesterly winds.

While accumulation is not expected to be significant, the system marks one of the earliest snow events of the season for metro Atlanta.

Possible Impacts and Travel Advisory

Forecasters say most of the snow will be light and short-lived, though some flurries and minor dusting could occur north of the city, particularly in elevated areas like Cherokee, Bartow, and Forsyth Counties.

Motorists are advised to drive carefully as bridges and overpasses could briefly become slippery if temperatures continue to fall into the mid-30s by evening.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City says no official winter advisory has been issued at this time but cautions that visibility may be briefly reduced during snow showers.

Cold Temperatures Continue Across Georgia

Behind the snow band, cold Arctic air is expected to settle into North Georgia overnight. Temperatures are forecast to dip into the upper 20s and low 30s, with wind chills making it feel even colder.

Forecasters expect the cold air to persist through midweek, keeping much of Georgia under unseasonably cold conditions for several days.

A Rare Sight for November

While Atlanta occasionally experiences light flurries in early winter, measurable snow in November is uncommon. Residents across Marietta, Roswell, and Decatur shared videos on social media of snowflakes falling — a surprise treat for locals unaccustomed to winter weather this early in the season.

Meteorologist Chris Nunley said the brief snowfall is being driven by the same cold front that brought freezing conditions to parts of the Carolinas earlier in the day.

“Light snow showers are moving southeast toward Atlanta this afternoon,” Nunley shared in his update. “It’s a quick-moving system, but it’s a sign winter is already knocking on Georgia’s door.”

Residents Urged to Prepare for the Cold

City officials are reminding residents to prepare for the cold snap by checking heating systems, protecting outdoor pets, and covering sensitive plants. The Georgia Department of Transportation has also placed crews on standby in case of icy patches on overnight roadways.

By Tuesday morning, skies are expected to clear, though morning lows will remain below freezing across much of North Georgia.
