Undocumented Father Killed by ICE Agent in Franklin Park Had No Criminal Record, Lawyer Says

FRANKLIN PARK, Ill. — The attorney for a man fatally shot by a federal immigration officer in Franklin Park says his client had no criminal background, despite government claims labeling him a threat.

Attorney Challenges ICE’s Portrayal

Silvero Villegas-Gonzalez, 38, was killed Friday morning when an ICE agent attempted to arrest him outside his home. Federal officials said he resisted and tried to drive his car into agents, prompting one to open fire.

But his attorney, Manuel Cardenas, disputes the government’s characterization, saying Villegas-Gonzalez’s only history was a handful of traffic violations.

“It didn’t seem to fit the person that I knew,” Cardenas said. “He was undocumented, but he was complying with every single law. He was working, respectful, and always willing to comply with the court.”

Minor Traffic Cases, No Violent History

Court records show Villegas-Gonzalez faced four traffic violations between 2010 and 2019, including speeding, driving without insurance, and not having a child restraint seat. His lawyer represented him in two cases, which he said were resolved without any criminal violence.

Homeland Security officials, however, described him as having a criminal history that included reckless driving, and they emphasized his undocumented status.

Shooting Sparks Questions

Villegas-Gonzalez had just dropped off his two sons at school before the shooting, family members said in a GoFundMe post created after his death. His death has prompted calls for accountability, with Cardenas demanding a full investigation.

The FBI’s Chicago Field Office confirmed it is assisting with the review. It remains unclear whether any body camera footage exists, as not all federal agents are required to wear them.

This case has stirred debate over immigration enforcement and the use of deadly force. Do you believe ICE agents should be required to wear body cameras during all operations? Share your opinion in the comments and continue the discussion at SaludaStandard-Sentinel.com.
