1 Person Killed in East Charlotte Shooting That Triggered Lockdown at Devonshire Elementary

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A shooting in east Charlotte left one person dead Monday afternoon and caused a temporary lockdown at a nearby elementary school, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD).

Shooting Near Elementary School

Officers responded to reports of gunfire on Barrington Drive, near Devonshire Elementary School, shortly before 4:20 p.m. When they arrived, police found one person suffering from gunshot wounds. Medic pronounced the victim dead at the scene, authorities said.

Police confirmed that the shooting did not occur on school property, but the proximity to the campus prompted officials to take safety precautions.

Devonshire Elementary Locked Down

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) spokesperson said Devonshire Elementary was placed on lockdown from 4:20 p.m. to 4:51 p.m. while police secured the area. At the time, 11 students were still on campus, but officials confirmed that no students or staff members were injured.

The lockdown was lifted once authorities determined there was no ongoing threat to the school community.

Investigation Ongoing

As of Monday evening, police had not announced any arrests or released details about possible suspects or motives.

CMPD detectives remained on the scene for several hours collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses. Residents in the area were urged to check home security footage and report any suspicious activity.
